How To Wear a Peplum Shirt

The peplum shirt is one of the most flattering styles to wear this season. Its been around for awhile but still going strong. If you want to appear slimmer, then you definitely want to try this style.

It makes you look like you have curves. Women who have a straight body type could use a little bit of curves right? But really anyone can wear this and look flirty and girly. Isn’t that what we want? To look slimmer, more feminine, more pretty?

This shirt is everywhere. You can’t go into a shop and not find it. Therefore there are loads of affordable styles out there.

This shirt is one of those staples you should have in your closet. I like wearing this shirt when i feel a bit bloated. Most of all it makes me feel skinnier. Now whether it actually makes me appear skinnier is up for debate, but who cares if you feel skinnier right?

There are options that are more subtle like the one I am styling here. This option is good if you want to introduce this shirt into your wardrobe but don’t want to seem overly overdone. For some, this could be just the right amount of girly without looking like you are trying to hard.

You may want to have the bodice tighter and the frill longer and more dramatic. This will really slim down your waist while providing some vavoom into your outfit. Rather than be modest, try this version as a great touch to your date night ensemble.

But how to style a peplum shirt? There are so many options from work to date night. There are also different options for the frill length depending on how tall you are you may want to opt for a longer frill. Shorter torso gals could go for shorter frill length. The examples below showcase a peplum shirt from Ann Taylor. It is long sleeve, but you could also go with short sleeves going into spring and summer.

Try wearing this with skinny jeans.

You want to make sure your jeans are fitted to give the allusion of a tinny waist. You could wear this with flat shoes and skimmer or cropped jeans. For a casual date pair this with high heel sandals.

I wore this with some high heel mules for a more casual look. You could wear this to lunch with the girls or a casual date night with your spouse.

Mules: affordable under $50 (ASOS), pricey under $120 (Calvin Klein), expensive under $400 (Robert Clergerie)

Pair with floral patterned jeans.

For work i would wear pants. The ones i wore here are from 7 of All Man Kind. I found these a couple years ago and absolutely love them. To tone down the busy pattern for work i would wear with over the knee boots, and maybe a blazer if your office is more conservative.

Peplum shirt with joggers.

I styled the look below with a pair of joggers. I love this look. I wouldn’t want to wear flats. You need to balance out the girly look with some heels. This also would be great for date night.

Many of you have seen these shoes. They are my rocker high heels. I would wear this out with the girls or out on the town to a trendy restaurant or bar. You would want to wear a tighter peplum to off set the joggers baggy-ness.

Rocker shoes: affordable under $50 (Charlotte Russe), pricey under $140 (Saks Fifth Ave), expensive under $300 (Stuart Weitzman)

Moto jogger: affordable under $50 (Guess), pricey under $100, (ChiChi Active), expensive under $200 (Joie)

Military jacket for a more casual look.

You may want to opt for even a more casual weekend look. By wearing a military style army green vest over the peplum you take it down a notch. I see running around getting errands done on a Saturday or Sunday. I wore my short booties due to our cold weather right now. You could certainly throw on some flats.

I love this leopard bag. My mom gave me this years ago and its never gone out of style. Thanks mom!

Leopard bag: affordable under $50 (Bebe), pricey under $100 (Lord and Taylor Chinese Laundry), expensive under $300 (Herbergers Michael Kors)

Date night option with dress underneath.

Last is what to wear on a fancier date night? I wanted to wear a skirt for this look but couldn’t find one that worked that actually fit me. I now know i need to go thru my closet and pack away every skirt that doesn’t fit.

Anyways, I decided to put on this t-shirt dress with the peplum shirt. The strips make it seem a bit more dressy. It helped to wear high heel sandals as well. This was a happy accident. I know many of you probably have a sheath dress in your closet you could wear with this shirt.

This bag! If you are going to wear mostly black and white, or black and gray put a colorful bag with it. This gives the outfit a modern feel without looking too trendy.
